Reduced Map Functionality (temporary)

2018 May 13

Google has recently announced new terms and conditions for use of its maps api. Unfortunately, mcelroy.ca, as a non-profit, personal website, is unwilling to accept these new terms. The consequence is that, in early June, all of the dynamic maps on this site will cease to function or will have reduced functionality.

We are hopeful that all of this functionality can be restored using open source software (probably OpenLayers). However, this will require extensive reprogramming and will not be completed quickly. Indeed, the better the summer is for outdoors activities, the longer it will take. In the short run, we hope to implement expedient, duct-tape fixes that will maintain some functionality.

The effected pages include: Algonquin Route Planner, Algonquin Gazetteer, the index pages Geographical Index to Bushlog and Notes and Geographical Index to Site Photos, all embedded maps on various Bushlog and Notes pages, and the ability to display a photo's location on a map.

Early Spring Drive in Eastern Algonquin Park

2018 April 30

We returned to Algonquin Park to check on the status of the melt (For a comparison with 2018 March 26, see An Early Spring Drive into Lake Travers in Algonquin Park). The plan had been to drive into Achray, but the road was blocked at the main road so we continued on to Lake Travers. The park is still frozen pretty solidly, so it was no surprise to learn upon our return that the park opening had been further delayed to at least 2018 May 11.

Ice Out

2018 April 29

This morning we went for a drive around the local area to investigate the state of ice out. In summary, ice out has not yet occurred but it is imminent. A change of wind direction would probably do it. The Chalk River is very high and is slightly flowing over Forestry Road at the Corry Lake Bridge. Corry Lake is still ice covered.

First Paddle of the Season

2018 April 22

We're finally getting some nice spring weather. So we got the canoes out of winter storage yesterday and went for our first paddle of the season on the Chalk River this morning. The air was cool, but the sun was warm and the wind non-existant.

Winter Wonderland

2018 April 17

After the late season winter storm abated, everything was back to a winter wonderland for a few hours on Tuesday morning. Later as the weather turned milder, it degenerated into a wet messy slop.

We were encouraged to find that the red-winged blackbirds at the Chalk River survived -- no photos though.
