felling of an old white pine

Coming Down

An old -- probably in excess of a hundred years and perhaps more -- white pine is being limbed prior to felling. In reaction -- in my view, over-reaction -- to the 2006 July 17 storm (see After the Storm), Deep River Council has decided to proceed with removing many of the large trees that give the town its character. They cite "public safety".

Last Thursday -- the day of this photo -- was a wet and miserable day. For a view of this tree (and its now missing companion) in sunnier times, see White Pines.
