Exploring Eastern Algonquin Park via the Basin Depot Road

The Cabin at Basin Depot in Algonquin Park — The Cabin at Basin Depot — purported to be the oldest building in Algonquin Park — built 1892. (We suspect that the shiny metal flashing around the chimney is a little more recent.)

Most exploration of the Basin Road is best accomplished on foot. The various trails are described in the book Walks of the Little Bonnechere River by Mark Stabb and Roderick Mackay available from The Friends of Bonnechere Parks. The Bonnechere River is canoeable downstream of Basin Depot (see the Chrismar Adventure Map: Bonnechere River Provincial Park). According to the Friends of Algonquin Park Canoe Routes map: The Bonnechere River between McKaskill Lake and McGuey Farm Trail is shallow and rocky. The necessary portages have not yet been deeloped and the trip is a rough one.

Much of the exploring described above is outside of Algonquin Park. However, Algonquin Park, Bonnechere Waterway Park and Bonnechere Park mesh seamlessly together.
